Crisis Response: Afghanistan and Haiti

Amidst the conflict and crisis in Afghanistan, JRS/USA has launched an advocacy effort calling on all world governments to provide welcome and protection for Afghan refugees.  You can see JRS/USA’s statement to the Biden Administration and Congress to ensure that Afghans seeking refuge can seek protection and write your elected leaders.  JRS/USA featured an Ignatian Year interview with Wali Halou of JRS International in Rome.  Wali is a Syrian who worked with refugees in Aleppo and then for the JRS Middle East/North Africa region; he offers powerful reflections on how we belong to one another and are called to care for the most vulnerable in our midst, like refugees and internally displaced persons.

Magis Americas is organizing folks in the US to donate to an earthquake emergency fund, joining Jesuit international development and mission organizations worldwide in a global fundraising effort for both emergency relief and long-term recovery.  This initiative will support the response of Jesuits and Jesuit organizations in Haiti- groups like Foi et Joie (Fe y Alegria school network in Haiti) and Service Jésuite aux Migrants who have long histories working in impacted areas and whose staff are Haitian Jesuits and lay colleagues. This Jesuit Conference AMDG podcast featured Nate Radomski of Magis Americas where he discusses how Jesuit partners are accompanying the people of Haiti to rebuild.

We feel called by the Gospel and guided by Catholic Social Teaching to welcome the stranger by seeing in the immigrant the face of Christ. America is a country built by immigrants, most of us need to look back only one or two generations to discover our own immigrant ancestors.
