The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ

Next Sunday, June 2 is the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. The Old Testament and Epistle readings this year refer to the sprinkling of blood. In our Judeo-Christian understanding, blood consecrates and purifies a people when blood is sprinkled on them. By sharing in a blood sacrifice, two enemies who are at odds with each other settle their differences and enter a new covenant through that Blood. No blood, no covenant. We are brought to peace with God in the Blood of Christ. We receive His blood at the foot of the altar to initiate peace with God. And we extend the effects of that peace with others.
