Dignity Not Detention Passes in the General Assembly

The Dignity Not Detention Act, sponsored by Delegate Vaughn Stewart, was originally intended to prohibit Maryland law enforcement from opening contracts with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to detain undocumented individuals in their local jails.

Exciting news – Dignity Not Detention passes in the General Assembly! There are no words to describe what it means for immigrants across Maryland. So many tears in this special moment. We have so much more work to do but today, we accomplished something meaningful and real that will make a difference in the lives of countless families across the state.
This happened because of our collective efforts and there is endless gratitude to give that is coming soon! Love you all. Thank you for getting us here. Let’s take a breath of relief and celebrate. So so much more to come. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
For now, celebrate with us online: https://twitter.com/CASAforall/status/1381790198313459717

NOTE: This legislation was vetoed by Governor Hogan, but could be overridden during a Special Session of the General Assembly this December.
