Advocacy for an Environmental Human Rights Amendment

On February 23 at 1pm before the House Environment and Transportation Committee, there is a hearing for HB596 Constitutional Amendment – Environmental Rights. The proposal is the Environmental Human Rights Amendment to amend the Constitution of Maryland to establish that every person has the fundamental and inalienable right to a healthy and sustainable environment; and requiring the State to serve as the trustee of the State’s natural resources, including the air, land, water, wildlife, and ecosystems of the State, and to conserve, protect, and enhance the State’s natural resources for the benefit of every person, including present and future generations. It is important to show a wide range of support for this proposed amendment and you can help make a difference.

Here is how you can help.
Sign our petition to House and Senate leadership as well as committee chairs in both chambers. MDEHR has gathered over 1400 signatures. Will you help us get to our next goal of 2,800 signatures? Sign and share the Amendment petition with your faith community. This petition will be submitted as written testimony. Here is the link for the petition and more information. MD Campaign for Environmental Human Rights – Environmental rights are human rights (mdehr.org)
Write or telephone your delegate and senator a letter of support. We need to move this bill in the Environment and Transportation Committee but we will also need ⅗ vote to pass the amendment on the floor. Will you write a letter to ask your delegate to support and vote for this amendment? Write your state delegate here, and ask your faith community to join you. Will you help us get to our next goal of 750 letters?

Thank you for your advocacy and support of the Constitutional Amendment – Environmental Rights, advocating for each person’s right to a healthful and sustainable environment.
